Fall Hazard Spots in Your Home

Recent Statistics Show

Reduce Your Risk for Falls

  • in older adults, injuries due to falls account for between 75 and 100 billion dollars each year in direct and indirect health care costs
  • injury is the sixth leading cause of death among people over 65, and most of these fatal injuries are related to falls
  • about 25 percent of persons aged 65 to 74 report a fall in any given year
  • falls result in approximately 200,000 hip fractures in older adults each year.
  • Identify and fix home safety hazards
  • Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages
  • Exercise regularly to keep limber
  • Practice safe movements that will prevent a fall
  • Make an appointment with your health care provider to:
    • have your vision tested
    • review your medications
    • check your gait and balance

Are you or someone you love at risk for falling?
Review the following factors associated with falling and consult your physician as needed!

  • Female
  • Over the age of 75
  • Alcohol use
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Heart Disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • History of Arthritis
  • Decreased vision or refusal to wear glasses
  • Decreased hearing or refusal to wear hearing aid
  • Dizziness upon standing
  • Numbness/tingling in feet or legs
  • Weakness in legs
  • Refusal to use cane or walker as directed
  • Foot problems -- callouses, bunions
  • Poor fitting shoes
  • Medications taken for:
    • depression
    • blood pressure
    • anxiety
    • seizures
    • fluid retention
  • Memory loss
  • Confusion
