The Importance of Setting Future Goals
-
Recent research suggests that having long-term aspirations fosters a sense
of personal well-being.
-
This includes setting goals for self development as well as goals to help
others.
Notes:
- This suggests that it is important for older adults to set, plan, and achieve
concrete and realistic personal goals. (Isn't this important for other age
groups as well!?)
- However, we should exercise caution not to overstate what we know. The relationship
between goals and well-being may be bi-directional. A strong goal orientation
may influence one's sense of well-being, but it is also likely that having
a positive sense of personal well-being can lead to more long-term planning.
